Citizen-science data reveal drivers of PFAS variability in backyard chicken eggs
Explore the new citizen science study based on hundreds of laboratory measurements from across the Netherlands, including a summary, key figures, and the full report. Read the report →
On this map you can find all PFAS test results for backyard chicken eggs in the Netherlands that have been reported here (16/03/2026: 821 reports of which 63% above the EU limits). A test result is only a snapshot, PFAS levels can vary substantially at the same location. For privacy reasons, locations on the map are rounded to a nearby area, the exact sampling location is not shown.
Do you have a test result, please add it to the map. If you choose the category “do not show on the map”, your data will only be used for research. If you have tested more than once, please email me.
Maximum limit
The European Union sets the maximum PFAS limits for eggs, in micrograms per kilogram, in a regulation:
- PFOS: 1.0 µg/kg
- PFOA: 0.3 µg/kg
- PFNA: 0.7 µg/kg
- PFHxS: 0.3 µg/kg
- Or the sum of all four: 1.7 µg/kg
Please note, if an individual PFAS value exceeds its limit, but the sum does not, the eggs are still considered above the limit. That is also how the NVWA applies the limits.
Calculator
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for PFAS at 4.4 nanograms per kilogram (ng/kg) body weight.
Use the calculator to estimate how much your lab result contributes to the limit, using the EFSA calculator method or the RIVM calculator method. Please note that a test result is only a snapshot, and that RIVM advises against eating eggs from backyard chickens.
Testing
Private individuals can have backyard chicken eggs tested at the laboratories of Normec, Antea Group, Triskelion, and Cotecna, at prices ranging from € 125 to € 585. Read more here about the different providers.
This is an initiative by Dreas, a backyard chicken keeper with 5 hens, to create more transparency around PFAS in chicken eggs.
